The kids and I ventured out to wake up the garden yesterday. We are freshening up the beds with new layers of compost and a little organic fertilizer. I am also attempting to pull out more of the invasive, but right now dormant weeds that line the perimeter of the garden and do their best to creep in all summer long.
I had the most pleasant discovery as we removed the layer of leaves that served as mulch for the beds and the few fall plants that were in. After a very cold (for Texas) month, there was a beautiful head of lettuce ready to start feeding us for the spring!
And further signs of spring include my hardy comfrey plant rising from the depths of mulch to provide us with another year of its splendor. I planted it after hearing Howard Garrett recommend it as a useful herbal remedy for poison ivy. While I have yet to use it for its medicinal properties, I am most intrigued by the fact that supposedly it is like growing your own fertilizer.
It was also quite thrilling to discover beautiful blossoms on the peach trees!
And since mom had the camera out, we ventured into the field behind our house and spread a few dandelion seeds.
